[niv] Who is like the wise man? Who knows the explanation of things? Wisdom brightens a man's face and changes its hard appearance.

[bbe] Who is like the wise man? and to whom is the sense of anything clear? A man's wisdom makes his face shining, and his hard face will be changed.
[niv] Obey the king's command, I say, because you took an oath before God.
[asv] I counsel thee, Keep the king's command, and that in regard of the oath of God.
[jnd] I , Keep the king's commandment, and on account of the oath of God.
[kjv] I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
[nwb] I to keep the king's commandment, and in regard of the oath of God.
    [rsv] Keep the king's command, and because of your sacred oath be not dismayed;
[web] I say, "Keep the king's command!" because of the oath to God.
[ylt] I pray thee, the commandment of a king keep, even for the sake of the oath of God.
[bbe] I say to you, Keep the king's law, from respect for the oath of God.
[niv] Do not be in a hurry to leave the king's presence. Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases.
[asv] Be not hasty to go out of his presence; persist not in an evil thing: for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
[jnd] Be not hasty to go out of his sight; persist not in an evil thing: for he doeth whatever pleaseth him,
[kjv] Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
[nwb] Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatever pleaseth him.
[rsv] go from his presence, do not delay when the matter is unpleasant, for he does whatever he pleases.
[web] Don't be hasty to go out of his presence. Don't persist in an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him,
[ylt] Be not troubled at his presence, thou mayest go, stand not in an evil thing, for all that he pleaseth he doth.
[bbe] Be not quick to go from before him. Be not fixed in an evil design, because he does whatever is pleasing to him.
[niv] Since a king's word is supreme, who can say to him, "What are you doing?"
[asv] For the king's word hath power; and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
[jnd] because the word of a king is power; and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
[kjv] Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
[nwb] Where the word of a king , power: and who may say to him, what doest thou?
[rsv] For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, "What are you doing?"
[web] for the king's word is supreme. Who can say to him, "What are you doing?"
[ylt] Where the word of a king power , and who saith to him, `What dost thou?'
[bbe] The word of a king has authority; and who may say to him, What is this you are doing?
[niv] Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.
[asv] Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man's heart discerneth time and judgment:
[jnd] Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man's heart knoweth time and manner.
[kjv] Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
[nwb] He who keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
[rsv] He who obeys a command will meet no harm, and the mind of a wise man will know the time and way.
[web] Whoever keeps the commandment shall not come to harm, and his wise heart will know the time and procedure.
[ylt] Whoso is keeping a command knoweth no evil thing, and time and judgment the heart of the wise knoweth.
[bbe] Whoever keeps the law will come to no evil: and a wise man's heart has knowledge of time and of decision.
[niv] For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a man's misery weighs heavily upon him.
[asv] for to every purpose there is a time and judgment; because the misery of man is great upon him:
    [jnd] For to every purpose there is time and manner. For the misery of man is great upon him;
[kjv] Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
[nwb] Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man great upon him.
[rsv] For every matter has its time and way, although man's trouble lies heavy upon him.
[web] For there is a time and procedure for every purpose, although the misery of man is heavy on him.
[ylt] For to every delight there is a time and a judgment, for the misfortune of man is great upon him.
[bbe] For every purpose there is a time and a decision, because the sorrow of man is great in him.
[niv] Since no man knows the future, who can tell him what is to come?
[asv] for he knoweth not that which shall be; for who can tell him how it shall be?
[jnd] for he knoweth not that which shall be; for who can tell him how it shall be?
[kjv] For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
[nwb] For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
[rsv] For he does not know what is to be, for who can tell him how it will be?
[web] For he doesn't know that which will be; for who can tell him how it will be?
[ylt] For he knoweth not that which shall be, for when it shall be who declareth to him?
[bbe] No one is certain what is to be, and who is able to say to him when it will be?
[niv] No man has power over the wind to contain it ; so no one has power over the day of his death. As no one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
[asv] There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war: neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.
[jnd] There is no man who hath control over the spirit to retain the spirit; and no one hath control over the day of death; and there is no discharge in that war, neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
[kjv] There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
[nwb] no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither power in the day of death: and no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
[rsv] No man has power to retain the spirit, or authority over the day of death; there is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it.
[web] There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practices it.
[ylt] There is no man ruling over the spirit to restrain the spirit, and there is no authority over the day of death, and there is no discharge in battle, and wickedness delivereth not its possessors.
[bbe] No man has authority over the wind, to keep the wind; or is ruler over the day of his death. In war no man's time is free, and evil will not keep the sinner safe.
[niv] All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt.
[asv] All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man hath power over another to his hurt.
[jnd] All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time when man ruleth man to his hurt.
[kjv] All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
[nwb] All this have I seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: a time in which one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
[rsv] All this I observed while applying my mind to all that is done under the sun, while man lords it over man to his hurt.
[web] . All this have I seen, and applied my mind to every work that is done under the sun. There is a time in which one man has power over another to his hurt.
[ylt] All this I have seen so as to give my heart to every work that hath been done under the sun; a time that man hath ruled over man to his own evil.
[bbe] All this have I seen, and have given my heart to all the work which is done under the sun: there is a time when man has power over man for his destruction.
[niv] Then too, I saw the wicked buried--those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.
[asv] So I saw the wicked buried, and they came to the grave; and they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city: this also is vanity.
[jnd] And I have also seen the wicked buried and going away; and such as had acted rightly went from holy place, and were forgotten in the city. This also is vanity.
[kjv] And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
[nwb] And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this also vanity.
[rsv] Then I saw the wicked buried; they used to go in and out of the holy place, and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.
[web] So I saw the wicked buried. Indeed they came also from holiness. They went and were forgotten in the city where they did this. This also is vanity.
[ylt] And so I have seen the wicked buried, and they went in, even from the Holy Place they go, and they are forgotten in the city whether they had so done. This also vanity.
[bbe] And then I saw evil men put to rest, taken even from the holy place; and they went about and were praised in the town because of what they had done. This again is to no purpose.
[niv] When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, the hearts of the people are filled with schemes to do wrong.
[asv] Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
[jnd] Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the children of men is fully set in them to do evil.
[kjv] Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
[nwb] Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
[rsv] Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the sons of men is fully set to do evil.
[web] Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
[ylt] Because sentence hath not been done an evil work speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of man is full within them to do evil.
[bbe] Because punishment for an evil work comes not quickly, the minds of the sons of men are fully given to doing evil.
[niv] Although a wicked man commits a hundred crimes and still lives a long time, I know that it will go better with God-fearing men, who are reverent before God.
[asv] Though a sinner do evil a hundred times, and prolong his days, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, that fear before him:
    [jnd] Though a sinner do evil a hundred times, and prolong his , yet I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, because they fear before him;
[kjv] Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
[nwb] Though a sinner doeth evil a hundred times, and his are prolonged, yet surely I know that it will be well with them that fear God, who fear before him:
    [rsv] Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him;
[web] Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.
[ylt] Though a sinner is doing evil a hundred , and prolonging for it, surely also I know that there is good to those fearing God, who fear before Him.
[bbe] Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and his life is long, I am certain that it will be well for those who go in fear of God and are in fear before him.
[niv] Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow.
[asv] but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
[jnd] but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong days as a shadow, because he feareth not before God.
[kjv] But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
[nwb] But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong days, as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
[rsv] but it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God.
[web] But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he lengthen days like a shadow; because he doesn't fear God.
[ylt] And good is not to the wicked, and he doth not prolong days as a shadow, because he is not fearing before God.
[bbe] But it will not be well for the evil-doer; he will not make his days long like a shade, because he has no fear before God.
[niv] There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: righteous men who get what the wicked deserve, and wicked men who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.
[asv] There is a vanity which is done upon the earth, that there are righteous men unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
[jnd] There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there are righteous unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; and there are wicked to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
[kjv] There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
[nwb] There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there are just , to whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked , to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also vanity.
[rsv] There is a vanity which takes place on earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
[web] . There is a vanity which is done on the earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked. Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
[ylt] There is a vanity that hath been done upon the earth, that there are righteous ones unto whom it is coming according to the work of the wicked, and there are wicked ones unto whom it is coming according to the work of the righteous. I have said that this also vanity.
[bbe] There is a thing which is to no purpose done on the earth: that there are good men to whom is given the same punishment as those who are evil, and there are evil men who get the reward of the good. I say that this again is to no purpose.
[niv] So I commend the enjoyment of life, because nothing is better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany him in his work all the days of the life God has given him under the sun.
[asv] Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be joyful: for that shall abide with him in his labor all the days of his life which God hath given him under the sun.
[jnd] And I commended mirth, because there is nothing better for man under the sun than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry; for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God hath given him under the sun.
[kjv] Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
[nwb] Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labor the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
[rsv] And I commend enjoyment, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink, and enjoy himself, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of life which God gives him under the sun.
[web] Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be joyful: for that will accompany him in his labor all the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.
[ylt] And I have praised mirth because there is no good to man under the sun except to eat and to drink, and to rejoice, and it remaineth with him of his labour the days of his life that God hath given to him under the sun.
[bbe] So I gave praise to joy, because there is nothing better for a man to do under the sun than to take meat and drink and be happy; for that will be with him in his work all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.
[niv] When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe man's labor on earth--his eyes not seeing sleep day or night--
[asv] When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes),
[jnd] When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes),
[kjv] When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
[nwb] When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
    [rsv] When I applied my mind to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night one's eyes see sleep;
[web] . When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes),
[ylt] When I gave my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that hath been done on the earth, (for there is also a spectator in whose eyes sleep is not by day and by night),
[bbe] When I gave my mind to the knowledge of wisdom and to seeing the business which is done on the earth (and there are those whose eyes see not sleep by day or by night),
[niv] then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all his efforts to search it out, man cannot discover its meaning. Even if a wise man claims he knows, he cannot really comprehend it.
[asv] then I beheld all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because however much a man labor to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea moreover, though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
[jnd] then I saw that all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because however man may labour to seek out, yet doth he not find ; and even, if a wise think to know , he shall not be able to find out.
[kjv] Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
[nwb] Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man may labor to seek out, yet he shall not find ; yes further; though a wise thinketh to know , yet shall he not be able to find .
[rsv] then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out; even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out.
[web] then I saw all the work of God, that man can't find out the work that is done under the sun, because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he won't find it. Yes, moreover, though a wise man thinks he can comprehend it, yet he won't be able to find it.
[ylt] then I considered all the work of God, that man is not able to find out the work that hath been done under the sun, because though man labour to seek, yet he doth not find; and even though the wise man speak of knowing he is not able to find.
[bbe] Then I saw all the work of God, and that man may not get knowledge of the work which is done under the sun; because, if a man gives hard work to the search he will not get knowledge, and even if the wise man seems to be coming to the end of his search, still he will be without knowledge.
